In Vastu Shastra, direction isn't decoration — it's the framework. Each of the eight compass directions carries a distinct quality, and where you place a room relative to those directions quietly shapes how the space feels to use. Here's the plain-English version.

Why direction matters at all

Vastu grew out of a simple observation: the sun moves, and light, heat, and air reach different parts of a home at different times of day. A north-east window catches gentle morning light; a south-west wall soaks up the heaviest afternoon heat. Over centuries, those patterns were codified into guidance about which activities suit which zones. Strip away the mysticism and you're left with something practical — orient your rooms to the way light and air actually behave.

The four cardinal directions

North (Kubera). Associated with wealth, flow, and opportunity. A good zone for open space, water features, and your home office or cash box. Keep it light and uncluttered.

East (Indra). The direction of the rising sun — health, vitality, new beginnings. Ideal for the main entrance, living areas, and windows that let morning light in.

South (Yama). A zone of strength and stability, but also heat. Best for heavier furniture, storage, and staircases — not for leaving open or empty.

West (Varuna). Linked to gains, creativity, and children. Works well for dining, study, or children's rooms.

The four corners do the heavy lifting

North-East (Ishanya). The most valued zone in Vastu — calm, clear, and light. Reserve it for a prayer space, meditation corner, or simply keep it open. Avoid heavy storage, toilets, or clutter here.

South-East (Agni). The fire corner. Naturally suited to the kitchen and anything involving heat or energy.

South-West (Nairutya). The anchor. This is where weight belongs — the master bedroom, heavy furniture, the most grounded part of the home. It should feel solid and stable.

North-West (Vayavya). The direction of air and movement. Good for guest rooms, a garage, or spaces where things (and people) come and go.

A quick way to remember it: light and calm in the North-East, fire in the South-East, weight in the South-West, movement in the North-West. Everything else is detail.

How to use this in your own home

You don't need to renovate. Start by finding true north with your phone's compass, standing at the centre of your home. Note which rooms fall in which zones. You'll often find that small adjustments — moving a study to the west, keeping the north-east corner clear, shifting heavy storage to the south-west — bring a room noticeably more in line with its ideal quality.

That's exactly what Vastu Sense automates: upload your floor plan, and it maps every room to its direction and scores how well your home aligns — then suggests the smallest changes with the biggest impact.
